Mark Amodei is Not the One

Besides Obama’s 122nd speech on health care reform, the other news yesterday was that Mark Amodei is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Harry Pelosi Reid in Nevada’s 2010 Senate race. I listened to him on the local talk radio show, and I think he is a weak candidate. As a state legislator, he cosponsored one of the most comprehensive tax packages (read “largest tax increases”) ever seen in Nevada. His answers to callers’ questions sounded weasely to me. When asked about abortion, he said said he’s been on both sides but refused to say what his position on it is now, other than that he opposes Federal funding for abortions. When ask about his position on affirmative action, he said he’d have to “study” the issue before taking a position. Huh??? He wouldn’t say he was against the State legislature going full time, only that he was “proud” that Nevada voters continually reject such proposals. He is from the northern part of the state, so most voters in Las Vegas (i.e. the majority of voters in the entire state) have probably never heard of him. In short, he probably wouldn’t be able to beat Reid in the general election, no matter how low Reid’s approval rating is.
There are already 2 people in the race. Danny Tarkanian and Sue Lowden both have better name recognition and better conservative credentials. Amodei’s entrance into the race, and the probable entrance of Sharron Angle, will do nothing except ensure that the Republican candidates will spend lots of campaign cash fighting each other in the primary. The “winner” won’t have the cash to run a successful campaign against Reid, who will also be able to cherry pick statements made against each other in the primary as ammunition to use against them in the general election. In other words, Mr. Amodei may have just assured Reid’s victory in 2010.
